I've been getting some quilting done, but nothing really done enough to show. I basted three small quilts, one I have started hand quilting Baptist fans. I've been getting a bit of machine applique done and started a new hand applique project. I'll be sure to show them when they get to the "complete" stage.

The end of summer is nearing. Boo-Hoo I always think of this song by Dashboard Confessional:
so long sweet summer
I stumbled upon you and gratefully basked in your rays.....

I thought I'd post a few photos I shot in the garden today.

I probably should have flicked that grasshopper away, but I couldn't bear to. I thought he made the shot a little unusual.
My favorite flower of all time!

This little Mexican hat is out in my wildflower patch. It is about the only thing left out there.

See this beautiful vintage looking fabric postcard? Libby at Paper Napkin Poetry made it for me! (I borrowed the photo from her site) I couldn't be more thrilled with it and especially her thoughtfulness. It makes me smile every time I see it.
Still Alice was a heart wrenching, amazing book. I'm not sure I've ever read a fiction book that made me cry at times- this one did.
I'm loving The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (despite the name). I saw it on Valentina's blog and she told me she was really enjoying it.
Next in line is Pearl of China by Anchee Min.

Hopefully I'll have something quilty to show you the next time I post.

  7. Thanks for sharing the flowers, I've never seen the Mexican Hat one. It is very unique. I loved the Guernsey........Society book. The characters became my friends. I had borrowed it originally but I had to go out and buy my own copy to read again.

  8. Lovely flower photos--ours are pretty much kaput here. They're either sun bleached or the blossoms are gone.
    The postcard is gorgeous!

  12. Oh my favorite flower is also the cone flower. I have them every where they will grow. I also just think the post card is just to die for. I hate it that it is the last few weeks of summer. I love fall but our winters here in the mountains are not fun.

  13. Pretty late summer flowers Lori. I really enjoyed the Potato Peel book, another one for your list is The Help...you should listen to it though because the readers do a fantastic job and you will be transported to 1963.

    I love the postcard...such talent!

  14. Just love the pictures of the flowers and I'm with you - so sad to see summer going. It actually felt like fall here this morning. The postcard is beautiful. I don't think I've seen anything like that.

And I missed your last post while I was gone, but I'm really in love with your Vicksburg quilt!

  15. I love summer and hate to see it go. The heat can go, but not the sun and long days. Grasshopper look too much like crickets and I hate crickets. I would have flicked the little bugger off the flower. But that's just me.

  16. I just started hand quilting a quilt with Baptist Fans for the first time. Its an old "utility" quilt top found in my grandmother's house after she died, so I thought the Baptist fans would work well.

  18. Mexican Hats~! i've been trying to think of what they are called for the last few days. my dh brought me a flower from one that he had found in an unexpected part of the outer yard and i was thrilled. i'm guessing that the plant came from some wildflower seed that i scattered around out there a couple of years ago. i think it's the only thing that grew and i had given up on ever seeing results . . . i needed that happy little surprise.

i've noticed that i have been in a reading mood lately too and think it has a lot to do with the sadness that i always feel at the end of summer . . . will have to request the Alice book from the library when i go today to pick up A Million Little Pieces. i read the Potatoe Peel book a few weeks ago and thought it was worth the read but had a hard time getting into it for some reason.
i'm in the middle of a Stephen King (Under the Dome) and have enjoyed the pleasure of just getting lost within a great big good story.

i'm so glad that you are enjoying your postcard.

    :-)
